3rd Grade Homework
Third graders are expected to do approximately 30 minutes of homework a night. It will include the following:
Daily Reading Homework (20 minutes at least 4 days a week):
Our expectation for homework is that students read 20 minutes every day with the Book Project being completed by the due date (which will require additional time). We will provide instructions and materials for each book project at the beginning of each month. These projects will be discussed and modeled in class and we welcome any questions.
The Reading Log needs to be filled out weekly and should show at least 80 minutes a week of reading. We will teach students how to fill this log out in simple ways. As parents, it’s tempting to fill it out for them, but we really want them to take responsibility for this assignment.
Daily Math Homework (10 minutes at least 4 days a week):
Math homework is to be done for 10 minutes a night and should focus on memorizing multiplication and division math facts 1-10. We encourage students to use the Reflex website, flashcards, songs, and any other online sources available.
Included in our weekly math lesson is a Family Letter and Learning Activity. This will be assigned each time we begin a new lesson (about every 5-6 school days). At least one of these assignments will go home weekly.
Monthly Reading Book Projects:
As part of the reading homework, students are expected to complete a book project. This is to be done at home and is to be completed by the student - using his or her own handwriting, drawing, typing, etc. Family can help gather supplies, make suggestions, brainstorm ideas, and assist as a ‘helper’, but should not be doing the project for the child.
Below is an overview of the projects. At the beginning of each month, a new Reading Log and detailed directions for that month’s project will be sent home. Examples and modeling will be shown in class.
Due dates are typically the last school day of the month. However, some are adjusted. When the Reading Log is handed out each month, the due date for that month will be filled in by the student.
